Arestin: The Secret to Healthier Gums

If you struggle with gum disease, you're not alone — millions of people deal with this common condition. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings are the pillars of good oral hygiene, but sometimes they aren’t enough to fully manage gum disease.

That’s where Arestin® comes in. Arestin is a powerful antibiotic treatment designed to target the bacteria contributing to periodontal disease — and it’s available here at Chelsea Dental Aesthetics in New York City.

If you’re battling gum disease, Dr. David Blaustein may incorporate Arestin into your periodontal maintenance treatment plan.

Read on to see why it’s the secret to healthier gums.

Learn more about Arestin

Arestin is a localized antibiotic treatment to combat periodontal (gum) disease. Arestin microspheres are small particles that contain minocycline, a potent antibiotic.

Arestin helps manage gum disease by targeting the spaces where bacteria thrive — deep pockets (periodontal pockets) that form as your gums pull away from your teeth. Once applied, Arestin slowly releases over time and eliminates the bacteria.

How does Arestin work?

If you have gum disease, you can benefit from nonsurgical scaling and root planing. During this procedure, Dr. Blaustein removes plaque and tartar from below your gum line.

Scaling refers to removing plaque and tartar using specialized tools; root planing involves smoothing the tooth roots to help your gums reattach properly.

After a deep cleaning, Dr. Blaustein or a hygienist may apply Arestin to target any remaining bacteria in the periodontal pockets. Applying Arestin takes just a few minutes, doesn’t hurt, and doesn’t require bandages or covering.

Over several days, the microspheres release antibiotics to reduce infection and inflammation in your gums.

Benefits of Arestin

Arestin therapy offers several benefits. It can:

Offer targeted therapy

Arestin isn’t an oral antibiotic. We place Arestin directly into the infected gum pockets, treating periodontal disease without affecting the rest of your body.

Shrink your periodontal pocket size and reduce bleeding

Combining Arestin with professional cleaning promotes better healing and reduces the size of gum pockets. According to clinical studies, Arestin helps reduce pocket size by 22% when reevaluated after nine months and is two times more effective at reducing gum bleeding.

Provide a minimally invasive treatment option

Arestin is painless and noninvasive, making it a simple addition to your periodontal treatment that doesn’t require extra downtime or discomfort.

Arestin improves oral health

Periodontal disease can worsen over time if left untreated, leading to tooth loss and other serious health issues. Gum disease is the leading cause of preventable tooth loss.

Arestin targets the root cause of gum disease — bacteria — and helps reduce gum inflammation and infection.

By reducing the depth of periodontal pockets, Arestin helps restore gum health, improves oral health, and prevents disease progression. It can quite literally help save your teeth!

Is Arestin right for you?

About 40% of adults over 30 have some form of periodontal disease. If you’re one of them, Arestin could be part of your journey to healthier gums. It’s particularly effective for those with moderate to severe gum disease needing more than deep cleaning to manage their condition.

Dr. Blaustein and the Chelsea Dental Aesthetics team in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan can examine your gums, measure the depth of your periodontal pockets, and determine if scaling and root planing with Arestin is right for you.
